PacMan was released in 1980 and is arguably the most recognised video game of all time, and whilst the likes of Space Invaders, Defender, Galaxians and Asteroids were all arcade machine smash hits from the same era, Pac Man was the first arcade game that attracted just as many female players as male, and over 40 years on, most of us still have extremely fond memories of crowding around a Pac Man arcade machine with friends.
Originally Japanese makers Namco were going to call the game Puck-Man, taken from the Japanese phrase ‘paku-paku’ (to gobble up) but before release they realised that with a quick scratch with a 10p or quarter, the overseas players would find it amusing to change the ‘P’ to an ‘F’ so it was decided to play safe and change ‘PUCK’ to ‘PACK’.
Pac-Man is an extremely addictive game – and it can be beat! But that’s not an easy feat. To beat Pac-Man you not only have to munch dots and pills, dodge ghosts, eat ghosts, all the fruits and an endless number of gold keys – you have to do this without getting beat for 5-6 hours until finally on the 256th screen, the screen seems to split – the left hand side normal, the right hand side a mish mash of colours, numbers and letters which make the maze unplayable.
But let’s face it – most of us won’t have the spare time to become Pac-man experts – but that doesn’t mean you can’t become great! Anyone who can get through a fair number of ‘KEY’ screens will impress friends, especially when most players bomb out on the strawberry or grape screens. To help you through – you need to learn some patterns. Patterns are reliable and will help you guide Paccy through the mazes with ease. Patterns work because the ghosts also work to patterns and even though each ghost seems to have its own personality (Shadow the red ghost for instance is like a shadow, very aggressive and always on your back) they are predictable and work to patterns. Learn these 3 patterns and you too can smash Pac-Man.

The Pac-Man hiding place
There’s nothing worse than being 30 minutes into a game, which has no save function and the doorbell goes, or you have to do something and leave your Pac-Man to just get munched. Well this is pretty well known but still worth mentioning, there is a hiding place in PacMan which will keep your PacMan safe until you come back. It works better from the tomato screen onwards BUT it still works as long as you enter the hiding place without being spotted (ghosts can’t see you going in or you’ll be munched). As people got better on Pac-Man, revenues reduced as a 10p could last for hours. To keep players interest and make more money, new, harder games such as Ms Pac-Man were introduced and over the years there have been many, many enjoyable versions of Pac-Man from Pac-Man 3D, Super Pac-Man etc. but for Arcade WOW, there’s only 1, the only, PAC-MAN.
