Who cares… what does it matter? You might ask… well, this is a VERY important question for the many who have recently built a Man Cave or a garden room, had a garage conversion or even a fully equipped home bar installed.
These folks have invested £1000s in making their den cool, many with a jukebox, big screen and even a pool table if space permits – but we feel no ‘escape from reality’ room is complete without a classic arcade machine that looks like the machines from back in the day but is built with modern technology, packs thousands of games, has remote control underflow lighting to light-match your space, and has a subwoofer with 100+ watts of sound to take you back to the arcade.
But all this means nothing if you cab doesn’t look the business.
So which retro arcade machine was the best looking? The Arcade WOW team challenged themselves with this question – a complete waste of time, but a nice chance to reminisce nevertheless.
We all have favourite retro arcade games, or types of games from 80s shoot-em-ups like Galaga, Scramble, Moon Cresta, R-Type, Defender or, maze games like Pac-Man, Ms-Pac Man or first person games like DOOM. But there’s something about the look of a retro arcade cab that makes you go WOW – whether it’s blue Space Invaders cab with yellow wording and the huge monster shadow, or the big yellow Pac-Man, having an iconic looking arcade machine in your home makes your friends and family say WOW – and that’s before you even turn it on.
So, we had a vote and discovered we’re a diverse bunch of gamer geeks – it was a draw with one vote each for Space Invaders, Pac-Man, Defender, Asteroids and Donkey Kong. When you think about it, they all look cool so it’s down to personal preference, but one thing is for sure, whoever you have around to your place having a retro multi-player arcade machine will make their day as well as yours.
